Saturday 11th of April 2009- Sydney Blues
Dennis, Iain, myself and Frank went out wide in search of an Easter Sydney Blue. We were not really that keen following sketchy reports and big long days for zeroes. We were actually close to pulling the pin the night before!
Anyway, we headed out and set the lures near Browns and headed a long way over the shelf. By 11am, the Pakula Sprocket Violetta on the 24kg Shotgun went off and we were hooked up to fiesty Blue which jumped off 15 minutes later after pulling hook. The fish looked every bit of 150keggers, so we swapped the Shotgun for the 37kg and replaced the 24kg to the Long Rigger.
1 hr later, the Shotgun went off again, this time with a nice solid hook up and a grey hounding Blue heading for the Horizon. Plenty Blood, sweat and tears and after about 1 hour, we had the tag in Iain's First Blue and Biggest Fish, at around 150-180kg measuring 2.5m Short Length. This fish also completed Iain's Grand Slam- well done Bud, you have come a long way!
We were pretty pleased with our efforts, so slowly started trekking back towards Browns. We passed "Billfisher" who were on to a solid Blue which they later called in at 220kg plus, so we knew there were some big fish around.
Then an hour later at around 3:30pm, the short corner- a home made lure made by yours truly, erupted with a GINORMOUS Fish that proceeded to tail walk around the ocean. Dennis was on the rod after a long season behind the helm- he was well over due. We cleared the gear and settled in for the fight, with myself at the helm and Iain preparing to trace his biggest fish ever!
We saw the fish come up twice and saw bulk colour beneath the boat. This fish was Big. At one stage it came to the surface and was struggling to lift it's head out. Those first jumps really took it of her.
1 hour later, and the tag was in a monstrous fish. Iain made a great shot, then picked up the trace. With a bit of encouragement (more like shouting and instructing him if he lets go I would kill him! lol), the big fish surfaced and we finally got to see her shear bulk next to the boat. We called it for at least 250kg plus, measuring 3.1m short length. That is 500lb plus on the old scale, a great effort on a stand up 80lb outfit. It was actually on a new Okuma Outfit they we are trialling which made it even better.
It also felt FANTASTIC that even though we had a trophy fish up alongside the boat that would have definitely made some good club points and potential biggest fish prizes, we decided to let her fight another day. Much more rewarding knowing that she still roams the ocean. Hopefully we can get her when she is twice that size! lol.
After that, we had a drop on the mountain but the current was way too strong. So we hoisted the flags and set sail for home for what turned out to be a phenomenal day.

March 12th-15th- State of Origin Jervis Bay 2009
Well well well....what a bloody BRILLIANT WEEKEND!!!
I can honestly say, this was without a doubt the best State of Origin EVER!!! We all had an absolute BALL.
It all started when the crowd due from far on wide on to the grounds of the "Huskisson Beach Tourist Resort" where a cabin for each crew was organised and lay waiting to greet their new guests for the following 4 days. The weather forecast looked promising and the fishing reports consistent, so we were all pumped!!
The Briefing and BBQ started at around 8pm after everyone settled in to their cabins, meeting their guests from interstate and becoming acquainted with their crews whom they would be with for 12 hours a day over the next 3 days. Let me just say everyone gelled PERFECTLY.
Everyone was informed about what was happening, given their "Freebie" Bags and sent away to prepare for fishing the next day..as per usual, that didn't work too well, with most guys drinking, laughing and carrying on til the early hours in the morning- not that there is anything wrong with that, hell that is what this Event is all about, catching up with old mates and meeting new ones.
|
We all woke on Friday morning greeted with a spectacular Electrical storm on the horizon. But with that moving out to sea and a light breeze forecast for the day, everyone proceeded to the Shelf.
It wasn't too long before hook ups were heard left right and centre! By midday, EVERY SINGLE BOAT had at least hooked a fish, with several tagging them. Just to name a few, Marlin Magic had 4 by 1pm, Ungry with 3- De-virginising 3 first time Victorian Anglers!, and Reel Game fighting a mammoth Striped Marlin which unfortunately got tail wrapped and died. It later weighed in at 131.8KG!! A sensational effort on 24kg to another NSW First Time Angler "Ultrafish"
Without getting too carried away and stealing every boats story, by Saturday night 14 Travelling Victorian Anglers had at least tagged 1 Marlin! How good is that. I will let each of them tell their story, and stick to our team and the weekend events..
Friday night saw the crew scattered around Huskisson a little sleep deprived and all with sore arms, so most were in bed early in anticipation of another ripper day on Saturday.
Saturday again was absolutely Spectacular fishing. The boys on Bashr saw a Marlin Frenzy on a meatball, Team Highlander was fighting Marlin in their Sombrero hats, and we on Team Domenica III were doing cart wells when by 2pm we had tagged 2 lovely Striped Marlin.
The Saturday night briefing went Perfect as planned as well. We got up all the first time Anglers who caught Marlin at the Event, and no kidding almost half of the crowed were up the front! It was a phenomenal site which I know gave me a great since of achievement so I can just imagine how proud the Anglers must have felt along with their Captains and crews..
We gave away a whole stack of Prizes from our Fantastic Sponsors who include:
- Adrenaline Printing (Thanks Grant for the Shirts- Legend)
- Zacatak Lures (Thanks Changa and Mario, top prizes)
- Orient Point Bunk House (Rolo you are a gem- Cheers)
- E and K Scales (Cant believe Rolo won those scales Yogi!)
- Kell and Rigby (Cheers Craig for the trophies)
- Okuma (Thanks Chris for bags, came in handy)
- JB Lures (Dave Venn, what a Champion, drinkin on with the boys all night long!)
- Graz for the cards and Salmon.
- KMS Hair Products (Everyone is looking Schmick Aqua!)
Then we went on to the awards ceremony. And The Winners were:
|
The Biggest Turkey- Went to Luke Maddern for failing to put the bung in after launching his boat and sitting idle in the Bay, so he decided to jump in, fully clothed, bung-in-hand and inserted it under water in front of a cheering corwd! Spectacular effort son well done!
The Biggest Mouth Award was unanimously awarded to Marlin Magic which was actually announced by the crowd as the trophy was raided. Outstanding Anthony, well done to your non stop raido chit chat. We all believe you that you are the best! You're just lucky that you happened to prove it too this weekend!
The Hairiest Man Alive award went to Gino Angie2 after a Leon instigated Mardi Gras parade around the BBQ area. Well Done Gino, we thought you were a bit chubby like me, but we soon discovered that it was actually a build up of hair which over the years has grown to literally inches thick off your body!
The Longest Haul went to Gary Morgan for towing his Monster 650 Haines Classic all the way from Melbourne with his 2 accomplices Ancaman and Dalymacca- You are all Champions and top blokes.
The Smallest Fish Award for the smallest legal Gamefish was a very ferociously fought out competition which in the end awarded to Sammy0884 for an outstanding 62cm Dolly caught on a Live Slimy which actually weighed more than the fish!
And the most Prestigious award of the weekend which was well deserved thanks to a 4 fish day on Friday with only 3 Persons on board- one of which was a Virgin Victorian Angler went to MARLIN MAGIC!! Well done Anthony, you wanted this award and certainly did the job well and took us all by surprise. Full credit to you and your crew Gino and Dan Lee.
|
We then wrapped up the night and all went fishing on the Sunday, again with several boats getting amongst them.
Sunday night saw us all gathered at the Pub for a great feed before kicking on once more to the early hours of the morning, returning home a little worse for wear today.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who helped along the way in organising this event and all the sponsors. A few names which MUST be mentioned are:
Dennis- You are my best mate and my Brother in my eyes. Thank you for being so supportive and helpful in every way possible when these events are on. Without you we seriously could not put on such a fantastic show.
All the helpers over the weekend, Sammy for the Mic and Speakers, Aqua for the Projector and Screen, the Band of Brothers Boys for always doing what they can to help (Joe, Dave, Chris , Luke Nathan) Greg Edick for all your support in rounding up the crews, THE FAMOUS AND BRILLIANT Nathan Methodman for once again filming the whole event with such pride and passion, Pat for being the best sleeper I have ever seen and last but not least My Father for being sooooo supportive in everything I do.
What a weekend, I just can not believe how well it went.
I can not WAIT til the next one.
I can not wait to see the DVD.
|
February 21st-22nd and February 28th-March 1st - Port Stephens Interclub 2008
Dennis, Luke and myself fished aboard Reel Game for this years inaugural NSW GFA Port Stephens Game Fishing Tournament. We represented Jervis Bay GFC in the Southern Zone Composite Team.
On the first weekend we managed to tag 2 Striped Marlin which put us in a good position for the lead up to the second weekend with slow results being reported across the board.
The second weekend only saw us tag one more Marlin, however that put us in 4th for our targeted category of champion Angler for Luke Maddern. Out of over 500 Anglers and 180 boats, that for us was an outstanding result.
|
|
February 7th-8th - Pakula Friendly at Port Stephens
After backing up from a Great weekend in Couran Point, our expectations were high for Port Stephens. Our crew consisting of Dennis, myself, Pat and Nathan had a great weekend once again. We managed to hook a nice Black Marlin on Saturday but unfortunately lost it. There were several other fish caught including large Yellowfin Tuna and Striped Marlin
Day 2 was a spectacular day for us, with Pat landing a 21.6lg Dolphin Fish on 10kg line, which was very close to a new Australian Record.
|
The weekend overall was a great success, with once again thousands of dollars raised and plenty cleansing ales flowing at the Newcastle Port Stephens Game Club.
We managed to film a large bulk of all the fish captured, so the DVD should prove to be a great watch. Be sure to grab your copy soon.
|
January 31st-February 1st- Pakula Friendly @ Couran Point
We arrived at Couran Point to be greeted with one of the most Spectacular resorts we have ever seen. This place was truly amazing and would no doubt have to be one of the best locations to hold such an event.
|
The Pakula school was a great success, with many people listening to the wealth of knowledge Peter Pakula had on offer. He went into depth about the varying techniques of targeting the Marlin population off the East Coast of Australia. If you ever want to get some first hand knowledge and information off one of the best in the business, this event is definitely worth attending just for this very reason. And while you are at it, you also get to support Breast Cancer Research.
|
The Band of Brothers Crew split up over the weekend to make sure we had all bases covered. Nathan spent his time on a boat called "Yvonne", where they spent 2 long days outwide chasing Blue Marlin. Unfortunately for them, they did not manage to manage to snag a fish, however they did play some great practical jokes on the PF Committee members, which will make for great viewing.
Dennis and myself spent the weekend aboard "Lucky Strike" with the Freetime crew and Captain Ross did not disappoint us. We manage to catch 4 Black Marlin over the weekend ranging from 40-80kg. We managed to get one of the Virgin Anglers his first Marlin, and even yours truly got to tussle with a lovely Black on the second day.
|
As per usual, the Pakula Charity Auction was held on the Saturday night to sell off any donated gear for a very worthy cause. Thousands of dollars were raised. Everyone was pleased with the event.
|
